How to Get UK Road Tax Exemption for Your WAV (Easy Guide)
If you own or are planning to buy a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), you could qualify for WAV road tax exemption — saving you a significant amount of money every year. We’ve put together an easy-to-follow guide on how to find out if you’re eligible, how to apply, and what you need to know about Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle tax exemption.
Who Qualifies for WAV Vehicle Road Tax Discount in the UK?
You can claim a vehicle tax (Road Fund Licence or Vehicle Excise Duty) discount for disabled drivers or passengers, if you receive one of the following:
- The Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- The Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Child Disability Payment (CDP)
- Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
- Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (SADLA)
- The Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
- The War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
The vehicle must be used primarily for the benefit of the disabled person, for example, to get their prescriptions or go shopping. You can only have one vehicle tax-exempt at any time. So, if you have more than one adapted vehicle, you’ll need to choose which one to apply exemption to.
Standard PIP Rate holders:
If you qualify for Standard Rate PIP, you may be eligible for a 50% discount, instead of full exemption. You can apply for the discount following the same process as below.
How to Apply for WAV Tax Exemption
Applying for road tax-free status for your WAV is straightforward:
Buying a new WAV:
We’ll handle the process of applying for the disbled tax class when we register your new vehicle. If your WAV is leased through the Motability Scheme, your Motability road tax exemption will be organised for you automatically. To complete this for you, we’ll need:
- Proof of your qualifying benefit (e.g., award letter)
Changing your tax class:
If you’re applying for the first time for a vehicle that has already been registered, visit a Post Office branch that deals with vehicle tax (find your nearest using the Post Office branch finder). If you’re applying partway through your vehicle tax period, you’ll get an automatic refund for any full remaining months once your exemption is approved. You’ll need to take:
- Proof of your qualifying benefit (e.g., award letter)
- Your vehicle’s V5C registration document
- A completed exemption form (V10 form)
- Proof of your vehicle MOT (if applicable)
Renewing your exemption:
You must renew your vehicle tax exemption each year. You can do this online or by phone (0300 123 4321) if you already have an active exemption.
Additional Tips for Road Tax Exemption
- Make sure your benefit award is current.
- Only one vehicle can be registered for exemption at any given time.
