Middlesborough Council were informed of private hire businesses charging differing prices to wheelchair users and the disabled. One firm in particular, Boro Taxis, had deemed it uneconomical to charge the same amount for an eight-seater minibus for one person to accommodate their wheelchair as a four-seater car. The BBC learnt that Boro have temporarily agreed to subsidise such a service as they feel that the Council should provide compensation.

Wheelchair accessible vehicles provide the ideal solution for private hire firms as passengers can sit alongside the wheelchair in comfort yet the converted vehicle is economical and compact.
