Japanese company develop wheelchair which can climb six inch steps
In what could be a revolution for wheelchair users, a Japanese company is currently working on a powered chair which can safely travel across rough ground and even steps.
Called the Unimo, it has been developed by Nano-Optonics Energy and uses a set of treads to traverse the ground at a top speed of 4mph. It means that it can travel over terrain which existing models would find difficult incredibly difficult, such as or gravel, quickly and easily. The manufacturer claims the device can also travel up and down 6-inch stairs – almost twice the height the traditional chairs can manage. The huge advancements in both wheelchairs and wheelchair vehicles mean that those reliant on them have the opportunity to explore more of the world than ever before.
While a date for its release not yet released, it is believed that the first destination for the Unimo could be medical centres to help with patient rehabilitation.
