The 5th annual International Wheelchair Day will occur on March 1st 2012 and is a great opportunity to take the time for users to celebrate the wheelchair and raise awareness for those needing to use them.
The day was originally launched by Steve Wilkinson, also known as WheelchairSteve to commemorate the birthday of his late mother, but soon transformed into a global celebration of the mobility device.
The day should also be used to consider the challenges that wheelchair user’s face and the number of people around the world who do not have access to wheelchairs and wheelchair vehicles.
To help celebrate the day, there will be many events being held around the UK and the world, including a charity fundraising event at the Percy Hedley Foundation Sports Academy in Killingworth. The event will include a wheelchair basketball game, art exhibition, and a charity gunging. If you live in the area and fancy helping raise awareness for the cause, please drop by to the free event from 16.00.
